Suzanne Somers: Supplements That Make You Live Longer

Toxic exposures are everywhere today. In our food. The air we breathe. The water we drink. The household cleaners we use.
The good news is you can reduce your risks and live longer by eating organic food, drinking filtered water, and choosing non-toxic consumer products. But Hollywood actress and health advocate Suzanne Somers recommends going one step further to boost your body’s defenses and your longevity – by taking antioxidants and supplements that can help arm the immune system to fight poisons and disease.
In “Bombshell: Explosive Medical Secrets That Will Redefine Aging” (Crown Archetype, $26), Somers makes a strong case for eating a pesticide-free organic diet, avoiding genetically modified foods, consuming probiotics (healthy microbes in yogurt and other foods) and taking antioxidants such as resveratrol to counteract the effects of toxins and to promote wellness.

In an exclusive interview with Newsmax Health, Somers says her health advice is based on research and conversations with dozens of leading doctors and scientists. Those experts — including conventionally trained doctors and alternative practitioners alike — offer untraditional “outside the standard-of-care box” prescriptions for living a long and healthy life in an increasingly toxic world, she said.
“The overriding problem on the planet today is toxicity,” she said. “There’s nobody alive, no living thing that has a clean body. We all have a toxic burden to one degree or another. We can minimize our exposure by using green household cleaning products [and] by putting reverse osmosis [filters] on our water faucets and showers.”
But it’s also important to boost your diet and health with nutritious foods and nutrients to combat the growing number of harmful substances that fuel disease.
“I grew up in a less-toxic world,” she tells Newsmax Health. “I was born in 1946. We didn’t eat organic food because food was organic. Nobody thought it was a good idea to spray poison on our food. So I went halfway through my life not being exposed to poisons. My mother cleaned the house with lemon and water and vinegar.”
Since then, she said, the American diet has become “less and less nutritious,” and toxic substances in consumer products have skyrocketed.
Somers says she produced her latest book to provide a “handbook” for healthy living. She singled out Dr. Russell Blaylock — a Newsmax Health contributor and author of “The Blaylock Wellness Report” — for raising awareness about non-toxic therapies and the benefits of antioxidant supplements.

Among Somers’ recommendations:
Vitamin and diet supplements: Eat foods such as yogurt that contain probiotics — living microbes that promote the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut. Take vitamins, such as vitamin K2, which can prevent hardening of the arteries. Boost your intake of antioxidants such as resveratrol (in red wine and other foods) and curcumin (in curry) that combat free radicals that can cause oxidation and disease in the body. “You need a course of antioxidants rather than just one,” she said. “One isn’t enough because different antioxidants eat different free radicals. So antioxidants are your friends.”
Telemorase: This “nutraceutical” promotes cell longevity and has also been linked to healthier skin, hair, eyesight, and hearing. “Every cell in the body has a little tail on it called a telomere. And as each cell replicates — each cell replicates about 50 times — that telomere gets shorter,” Somers said. “The enzyme telemorase … keeps the tail long. And so now there’s a supplement that you can [take to] regrow your telomeres …. The downside is it’s very expensive.”
Avoid fluoride: Consider a water filter to remove fluoride and other chemicals from tap water in your home. “We take in a lot of fluoride in the shower … and fluoride is a waste byproduct of the aluminum manufacturing companies. It was so toxic they couldn’t bury it, they had to find a way to use it, so they started sending it to communities saying that it prevents dental decay.”
