I'm Suddenly Allergic to Dogs

Tuesday, 27 December 2011 09:28 AM

Question: Our dog died recently and we got a new puppy. Almost from the first day we had the new dog, I started having problems with what seems like an allergy – red eyes, sneezing, etc. I have never been allergic to dogs in the past. Can allergies come on later in life? I’m 55. Can there be something about this particular puppy, a Golden Retriever, that is a problem for me? Thanks for your help.

Dr. Hibberd’s answer:
You can develop an allergy at any time. It's the flakes from the animal's skin, called dander, not the fur that causes an allergic reaction. So even with a less hairy pet, you can be allergic. Wash your hands after playing with the puppy. You can limit the areas of the home where your puppy is allowed, keeping the dog out of the bedroom and the bed. HEPA filters are recommended by many physicians. These can be used in vacuum cleaners, too. Wash bedding frequently in hot water. Do not allow the pet in the car or, if you do, use washable seat covers. Clean and vacuum regularly.
