Trump: Virginia GOP Loyalty Oath 'Stupid'

Trump: Virginia GOP Loyalty Oath 'Stupid'

By    |   Sunday, 27 December 2015 08:59 PM EST

GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump criticized the Virginia Republican Party's loyalty oath on Sunday, taking to Twitter to say the oath will hurt the party's chances of winning.

Trump's tweets come after the state party announced earlier this month that voters in the Virginia primary will have to sign an oath affirming they are members of the GOP.

The state doesn't not require party registration, but the Virginia State Board of Elections OK'd the request to have GOP primary voters sign the oath before voting.

A similar pledge four years ago requiring Republican primary voters to say they would support the party nominee in November was scrapped after it came under criticism.

Trump polls best with voters who say they have no party affiliation, and that's likely the reason he is unhappy with the rule, CBS News reports.

He has signed an oath with the Republican National Committee saying he will support the party's nominee if it isn't him, but has since said the oath has a condition: He must be treated fairly by the party.

He has gone back and forth on whether he might mount a third-party bid, saying most recently that he is happy with how he is being treated.
