A columnist on the Claremont Review of Books website took on the #NeverTrump crowd in a recent column, saying that not only will Republican nominee Donald Trump make a better president than Democrat Hillary Clinton, he might just be the republic's last hope.

The column, titled "The Flight 93 Election" is written under the pseudonym Publius Decius Mus. Flight 93 was the plane where passengers on 9/11 stormed the cockpit and forced it to crash. Though all onboard died, they succeeded in preventing the terrorists who had commandeered it from hitting it's intended target.

Likewise, the real Publius Decius Mus came from a family noted for giving their lives for Rome on the battlefield.

The column's author argues that no matter how unappealing Trump may seem to dedicated Republicans and/or conservatives, he's a far better choice than Clinton, and likely the only chance to save a nation in decline.

"How have the last two decades worked out for you, personally?" he asks. "If you're a member or fellow-traveler of the Davos class, chances are: pretty well. If you're among the subspecies conservative intellectual or politician, you've accepted — perhaps not consciously, but unmistakably — your status on the roster of the Washington Generals of American politics. Your job is to show up and lose, but you are a necessary part of the show and you do get paid. To the extent that you are ever on the winning side of anything, it's as sophists who help the Davoisie oligarchy rationalize open borders, lower wages, outsourcing, de-industrialization, trade giveaways, and endless, pointless, winless war."

All of Trump's 16 GOP competitors would have delivered the same old thing, the writer argues, and Clinton will be a "pedal-to-the-metal" progressive-left agenda.

"So what do we have to lose by fighting back?" he asks. "Only our Washington Generals jerseys — and paychecks. But those are going away anyway."

The Washington Generals are the perpetual losers to the Harlem Globetrotters, needed foils to showcase the talent of the Globetrotters.

"Their purpose was to allow the Globetrotters to strut their stuff and to demonstrate how great they were," talk radio host Rush Limbaugh said Wednesday in discussing the column. "They were basically a bunch of fools."

"Yes, Trump is worse than imperfect," the writer says. "So what? We can lament until we choke the lack of a great statesman to address the fundamental issues of our time — or, more importantly, to connect them."

There's nothing to lose, he argues, in electing Trump, because if it doesn't work out the plane still would have crashed without him.

"The possibilities would seem to be: Caesarism, secession/crack-up, collapse, or managerial Davoisie liberalism as far as the eye can see … which, since nothing human lasts forever, at some point will give way to one of the other three," he says. "But for those of you who are sober: can you sketch a more plausible long-term future than the prior four following a Trump defeat?"
