Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions Endorses Trump

Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions endorsed Donald Trump for president on Sunday afternoon just two days before that state participates in the first multi-state primary day.

"Wow, what a crowd this is!" Sessions shouted to a crowd of more than 30,000 in a high school football stadium in Madison, Alabama.

"I told Donald Trump, this isn't a campaign, this is a movement," said the four-term Republican, who is one of the leading conservative voices in the Senate. "Look at what's happening. The American people are not happy with their government. So some say, you know, you just need to let the people calm down a little bit and they'll forget it and let it all go. Should we forget it? No we should not."

This year may be the last opportunity to fix illegal immigration, Sessions said.

"You have asked for 30 years, and politicians have promised for 30 years to fix illegal immigration. Have they done it?" he asked.

"No!" the crowd yelled.

"Donald Trump will do it," Sessions said. "Yes, he will."

Trump also will make better trade deals and see that the Trans-Pacific Trade Partnership does not pass, he said.

Sessions' endorsement was tempered slightly.

"Nobody is perfect," he said. "We can't have everything, can we, Mr. Trump? But I can tell you, I think at this time in my opinion, my best judgment, at this time in America's history, we need to make America great again."

It was not clear if Sessions was referring to some of Trump's critics who have said evangelicals should not be supporting him because of his background and sometimes crude language or something else.

Sessions has previously backed Trump's immigration policy of deporting all illegal immigrants and forcing them to go through the legal process to re-enter as well as building a wall along the 2,000 mile Mexican border.

The endorsement from Sessions, an icon of the tea party movement, is a blow to Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas. Cruz has fought Trump hard for tea party and Christian evangelical voters, and has often aligned himself with Sessions in his own immigration reform efforts.

Trump hinted at the endorsement on Twitter less than an hour before his arrival at the rally, calling it a "big surprise."
