Mitt Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, says he warned Jeb Bush he would have a difficult time beating Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton.
In an interview published Sunday in
The Washington Post, Romney said he held a private meeting with Bush in January.
"Jeb, to be very honest, I think it’s very hard for you to post up against Hillary Clinton and to separate yourself from the difficulty of the W. years and compare them with the Clinton years," Romney said he told Bush.
Bush responded "he was going to make his campaign about the future, not about the past," Romney said.
Romney said he didn't say anything to Bush at the moment, "But as he left, I said to myself, 'Gosh, in my opinion, it's not going to be as easy to make that separation as I think he gives the impression it will be.' One of the few things I predicted that turned out to be true."
Indeed, Bush started his campaign in midsummer as the front-runner and with a massive campaign chest with which he expected to vanquish his opponents. But he has steadily fallen in the wake of Donald Trump, who has labeled Bush "low energy.
Bush now in sixth place with only 4.3 percent support in the latest
Real Clear Politics average of polls.
Bush's campaign would not confirm what was said in the meeting, saying they were honoring an agreement it remain private.
