The man who murdered two New York City police officers on Saturday afternoon shot his former girlfriend in her apartment near Baltimore in the morning before heading to Brooklyn, Police Commissioner William Bratton said.
Ismaaiyl Brinsley, 28, who ambushed the officers in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of the borough before killing himself on a nearby subway platform, shot the woman in suburban Owings Mills about 5:45 a.m., Bratton said.
The city is about 15 miles northwest of Baltimore.
The 29-year-old woman was seriously wounded in the stomach and later underwent surgery, Bratton said. She was expected to recover.
The commissioner said the woman's mother told county police that "Brinsley was posting on the victim's Instagram account." Bratton described the posts as "very anti-police."
In one posting, about three hours before the officers were killed, Brinsley said, "I’m Putting Wings on Pigs Today."
After Baltimore authorities learned that Brinsley had ties to Brooklyn, they faxed New York police and other agencies a warning flier.
"Tragically, this was at the same time as our officers were being ambushed and murdered by him," Bratton said.
