Hillary Clinton said she is in favor of a no-fly zone over parts of Syria despite America's top general warning against it over fears of starting a larger conflict.
"I think it could save lives and hasten the end of the conflict," Clinton said during Wednesday night's presidential debate. "I'm well aware of the very legitimate concerns you have expressed from the president and the generals.
"It would not be done just on the first day. It would take a lot of negotiation, and it would take making it clear to the Russians and the Syrians that our purpose here was to provide safe zones on the ground."
Gen. Joseph Dunford, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the Senate Armed Services Committee last month a no-fly zone "would require us to go to war against Syria and Russia."
Clinton said she could help facilitate an agreement to aid the Syrian people by putting together a no-fly zone plan.
"I think we could strike a deal and make it very clear to the Russians and the Syrians that this was something that we believe was in the best interest of the people on the ground in Syria," she said. "It would help us with our fight against ISIS."
