Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid said Donald Trump "is a human leech who will bleed the country and sit at his golf resort laughing about the money he has made."
The Nevada Democrat called the Republican presidential candidate a "spoiled brat" and "a notorious con artist" during remarks on the Senate floor, according to Politico, which posted a brief clip of his comments.
The senator's website posted a transcript of his comments, in which he said, "Donald Trump is only trying to help Donald Trump. I don't care if he wants to be president or city commissioner. Donald Trump is in it to benefit Donald Trump."
Reid cited the Trump University case and noted the Flint, Michigan church incident in which a pastor told Trump to stop "ranting about how horrible Hillary Clinton is."
"Let's be clear about Donald Trump. He's a spoiled brat, raised in plenty, who inherited a fortune, used his money to make more money, and he did a lot of it by swindling working men and women. Why would he change as president? The answer is simple. Trump won't change. He is asking us to let him get rich scamming America," Reid said.
"We can't chance the sovereignty of this nation on a con man like Trump."
Trump has received rebukes from Reid before. In August, Reid said that evidence was mounting that tied Trump to Russian efforts to hack the electoral process. Reid has called into question Trump's immigration position, and challenged him to take the U.S. Citizenship Test.
The Senate minority leader is retiring when his term ends in January. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1986 and has been reelected four times, according to his website.
