Conservative radio talk host Glenn Beck on Saturday night asked people to join him in a fast in support of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, whom he is supporting in the GOP presidential election.

"I would like to ask you to join me and my family Monday in a fast for Ted Cruz, our country and the Nevada caucus," Beck posted on his Facebook page after Cruz finished a close third in the South Carolina GOP primary.

Beck on Sunday morning responded to scoffers, saying the ridicule shows that "the Church is dead asleep."

"Since when has a fast and prayer been crazy?" he wrote on Facebook. "Have we really become a nation that mocks those who pray and fast?"

Apparently so, he said, quoting one critic, who wrote: "Ok I have come to the conclusion that Glenn Beck needs to be put in the loony bin because he is asking people to join he and his family on Monday in a fast for Ted Cruz before the Nevada Caucus. Is this idiot for real??? Why don't he just accept the fact that Cruz lost and stop acting like a little cry baby and certifiably insane because he is making Christians look like whack jobs!!"

Beck replied that what really makes Christians look like "whack jobs" is voting without applying the principles they claim to uphold.

"I fear Lincoln was right," he said. "Our destruction will not come from an outside force but we will indeed destroy ourselves."

Beck listed off a number of things he said he has been mocked for in the past – all of which he says he was eventually proved right about:

• I was mocked in 99 when I warned New York about OBL.
• Mocked when I warned of a housing and banking collapse in 06
• Mocked when I warned Greece about the rise of Nazis.
• Mocked when I warned about the Caliphate.
• Mocked when I warned America about the rise of a strongman on the right who would rise after Obama by promising to "fix" all of our problems.
• And now mocked for prayer and fasting.

While Beck is backing Cruz's candidacy, he said others can join his fast and pray for the candidate of their choosing and for the future of American in general.

One woman pointed out, however, that Beck had specifically mentioned Cruz in his original post, and also challenged him on not following Jesus' command in Matthew 6:18 to not let it be known when you are fasting.

"Am I not allowed to ask for a fast for my friend? Am I not allowed to ask for a fast for a man I believe in?" Beck replied. "More importantly, are you not allowed to join or not join? Are you not allowed to pray and fast for what you believe in?"
