David Brock to Bernie: Stop Negative Campaign Against Hillary

Media Matters founder and Hillary Clinton supporter David Brock on Tuesday posted an open letter to Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, urging him to "immediately halt all negative campaigning" against Clinton.

"After first pledging to wage a positive campaign for President, you and your campaign have for weeks now engaged in a relentlessly ugly barrage of false character attacks against Mrs. Clinton, including running negative TV advertising of the sort you promised you never would," Brock wrote on his website Correct the Record.

Brock said Sanders has recently ramped up his attacks that he says range from "baseless insinuations" that the front-runner is compromised in her ability to support financial sector reform because of her paid speeches to Wall Street institutions to "unfairly impugning her reputation as a true progressive."

Such attacks "must cease," Brock said, because Clinton is the expected nominee and will suffer irreparable harm — as will the entire Democratic Party downticket — in the November general election.

"[B]y staying negative, all you are doing is helping Karl Rove and his ilk do their general election dirty work," Brock said. "In fact, Rove and his wealthy right-wing backers have already spent millions of dollars echoing the smears you and your campaign have unfortunately directed at Mrs. Clinton."

Brock praised Sanders for bringing important issues to the debate, but urged him to "Please stop" the negative attacks.

Brock has remained loyal to Clinton even as he resigned from the board of pro-Clinton super PAC Priorities USA Action earlier this month, saying the group had planted a story in The New York Times against his own groups, American Bridge and Media Matters, Politico reported.
