Former Secretary of State Colin Powell said Tuesday that he would vote for Democrat Hillary Clinton for president next month.

Powell, 79, a retired four-star Army general and a Republican who served President George W. Bush, made the announcement in a speech to the Long Island Association, a business group in New York, CNN reports.

Peggy Cifrino, Powell's chief of staff, confirmed the retired general's announcement. Powell voted for Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012.

In hacked emails released last month by D.C. Leaks, Powell slammed Republican nominee Donald Trump earlier this year as a "national disgrace" and an "international pariah."

He also attacked the "racist" controversy that Trump has perpetuated regarding President Obama's birthplace.

Powell is among many other Bush administration officials who do not intend to vote for Trump on Nov. 8 — including former Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, former Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board Chairman Brent Scowcroft, former Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, and former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage.
