NAACP Leader: IRS Right to Target 'Racist' Tea Party Groups

By    |   Tuesday, 14 May 2013 11:09 PM EDT

Former NAACP chairman Julian Bond said Tuesday that he believes the targeting of tea party groups by the IRS is well within the bounds of political fair play, reports the Washington Times.

In an interview on MSNBC, Bond said that Tea party groups are "overtly racist” and the “Taliban wing of American politics.”

Bond went on to blast former President Bush for what he alleged was that administration’s push for the IRS to investigate the NAACP.

In 2004, The NAACP was investigated for improper political activities after Bond made a highly critical speech of Bush’s actions.

Though the group was ultimately cleared of any impropriety, Bond said the NAACP was “unfairly targeted.”

Bond denied holding a double standard with today’s IRS targeting of tea party groups and the IRS investigation of the NAACP during the Bush administration.

“I don’t think there’s a double standard at all,” Bond said.

“I think it’s entirely legitimate to look at the tea party. I mean, here are a group of people who are admittedly racist, who are overtly political, who tried as best they can to harm President Obama … They are the Taliban wing of American politics and we all ought to be a little worried about them.”
