Bernard Kerik: Charge Against Trump Campaign Manager 'Politically Motivated'

("The John Gambling Show"/SoundCloud)

The battery charge filed against Donald Trump's campaign manager is "outrageous" — "and I think it's politically motivated," former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik said Wednesday.

"The tape, in my opinion, vindicates the campaign manager," Corey Lewandowski, he told radio talk-show host John Gambling. "It's wrong. I think it shouldn't stand.

"The mainstream media has to knock it off because they're inciting these things," Kerik added. "They're pushing it like he did something outrageously wrong — and I think that's wrong in itself."

The Kerik interview begins at the 33:55 mark in the audio clip above.

Lewandowski, 42, was charged Tuesday with simple battery for allegedly grabbing intentionally and bruising the arm of Michelle Fields, 28, now a former Breitbart News reporter, during a Trump rally on March 8 in Jupiter, Fla.

He turned himself into authorities in Jupiter and will be arraigned on the misdemeanor charge on May 4. The case has yet to be turned over to the Palm Beach County State Attorney's Office for prosecution.

Kerik headed New York's police force during the 9/11 attacks, serving under Mayor Rudy Giuliani. He called the charge against Lewandowski "an outrageous demonstration of over-criminalization.

"This is a clear example of what happens when you over-criminalize," Kerik told Gambling. "He barely touched this woman.

"I used to hang out with Rudy Giuliani and other major political figures in this country — and if they were going to go by that standard for any one of us, I could have had 50 reporters locked up and they could have had my security team locked up 1,000 times.

"Stop already," he said. "It's nonsense."
