The Communist revolution that catapulted Fidel Castro and brother Raúl into power in Cuba was a "liberation movement" — just like the American Revolution, President Barack Obama said Tuesday during a speech in Havana.

"Here's my message to the Cuban government and the Cuban people. The ideals that are the starting point for every revolution, America's revolution, Cuba's revolution, the liberation movements around the world, these ideals find their truest expression, I believe, in democracy," Obama said, National Review reports.

"Not because American democracy is perfect, but because we're not, and we like every country need the space that democracy gives us to change. . . . Many suggested that I come here and ask the people of Cuba to tear something down, but I'm appealing to the young people of Cuba who will lift something up, build something new."

In the American Revolution, colonists in the 13 American colonies overthrew the rule of the British monarchy and founded the United States. In the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro's 26th of July Movement staged a bloody revolt against Fulgencio Batista's authoritarian rule, which was backed by the U.S.

Obama — who is in Cuba this week as part of a historic visit as the island country and the United States restore diplomatic ties and trade — added that the United States still has many issues to solve.

"There's still enormous problems in our society. But democracy is the way that we solve them. That's how we got health care for more of our people. That's how we made enormous gains in women's rights and gay rights," he said.
