President Donald Trump continued his attacks on news organizations Saturday, vowing that "the dishonest media will never keep us from accomplishing our objectives on behalf our great American people."
"The fake media is trying to silence us," Trump said at the Celebrate Freedom Concert honoring the nation's veterans at the Kennedy Center in Washington. "But we will not let them.
"Because the people know the truth.
"The fake media tried to stop us from going to the White House, but I'm president and they are not."
The crowd inside the Kennedy Center Concert Hall roared with applause.
"We won and they lost," he said. "The fact is the press has destroyed themselves because they went too far. Instead of being subtle and smart, they used a hatchet. And the people saw it right from the beginning."
Trump has been bashing the press relentlessly on Twitter this week, slamming "Morning Joe" co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski in posts that were widely criticized by Republicans and Democrats. Trump has also been going after CNN after the resignations of three top staffers responsible for a story falsely linking a Trump ally to a Russian investment bank. CNN has retracted the story.
Trump ripped the MSNBC co-hosts again on Saturday and even suggested that another one of the network's hosts, Greta Van Susteren, abruptly lost her "For the Record" show this week because she "refused to go along w/ 'Trump hate."
Trump also defended his Twitter use in another storm, calling it "modern day presidential" and saying that he was thinking about "changing the name of #FakeNewsCNN to #FraudNewsCNN."
In addition, the president blasted CNN for its "garbage journalism," bringing a swift Twitter backlash Saturday from "The Lead" host Jake Tapper.
At the Kennedy Center, President Trump pledged that "we will always take care of our great veterans" and pointed to legislation he signed this week making the Veterans Administration more accountable.
"They were doing a terrible job for the veterans — robbing, stealing, hurting people," the president said. "You couldn't do anything.
"Now, you can say, 'You're fired.'"
