Peter King Slams Trump on 9/11: 'Feckless Pretender … Poor Man's Michael Moore'

New York Congressman Peter King has launched a tirade at "feckless pretender" Donald Trump, saying the GOP presidential front-runner "has descended into a poor man's imitation of Michael Moore."

In a statement released late Monday, King assailed Trump's attacks on George W. Bush and his implication during Saturday's debate that the 43rd president was in any way responsible for the 9/11 attacks.

"President George W. Bush's speech and appearance in South Carolina last evening are a vivid reminder of what real presidential leadership is all about -- particularly when contrasted with the pettiness and small mindedness that Donald Trump has repeatedly demonstrated in the last several days," King said in his statement.

George W. Bush made a campaign stop in South Carolina on Monday on behalf of his brother Jeb.  "It was my privilege in the tragic days, weeks and months following the attacks of 9/11 to observe and admire President Bush's strong and unyielding leadership, rallying the nation and putting in place a security structure which continues to protect our nation against further Islamist terrorist attacks on our homeland."

King's statement echoed the words of South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, who also compared Trump with liberal filmmaker Moore during an interview Monday on ABC's "Good Morning America."

"He has become the Michael Moore candidate of the Republican Party," Graham said, referring to the maker of "Fahrenheit 911," a political documentary that questions the Bush administration's actions before and after Sept. 11, 2001. "What he said about President George W. Bush being a liar and that the Bush administration is the cause of 9/11 is Michael Moore stuff," Graham said.

King has not held back in his criticism of others current and former GOP candidates. Last year, he called Texas Sen. Ted Cruz a "carnival barker." And in 2013, King said Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul "disgraced his office" with an attack on National Intelligence Director James Clapper.

In his statement, King stopped short of endorsing Jeb Bush or any GOP candidate. Instead, he saved his words of praise for President Bush.

"America needs a President with the strength and quiet dignity of George W. Bush not a feckless pretender like Donald Trump who has descended into a poor man's imitation of Michael Moore," King said.
