Sen. Kelly Ayotte rescinded her support for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, and it may be helping her.

"What comes out about him, I think I've already said my piece on it," Ayotte, a first-term Republican senator from New Hampshire, said on Wednesday, reports Politico.

On Friday, the controversial nominee faced a video from 2005 showing him making lewd and sexually aggressive comments, and on Wednesday, The New York Times reported that two women have accused Trump of touching them inappropriately and without their consent.

"I made the decision I made as a matter of principle," said Ayotte, whose criticized Trump for months despite saying he'd be better in the White House than Hillary Clinton. "That's more important to me than winning an election."

The senator has yet to see the fallout from her decision in the polls, RealClearPolitics doesn't list a poll for the New Hampshire Senate race from after early October, but Politico spoke to two voters who stand by Ayotte.

"I certainly am supporting Kelly. And I'm a Democrat. She's really a shining star in the Senate," said Stanley Stoncius, who's against Trump and might have to "hold my nose" for Clinton. "She's the state senator. She's not representing Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton."

"I want to keep the Senate to stay the way it is. I don't want the communists to take over," said Trump supporter Jacques Cattiaux, who called her choice to take back her endorsement of Trump "calculating… but that's the filth of politics."

Ayotte's opponent, former Gov. Maggie Hassan, agrees that the decision was calculated.

"She finally decided that that was enough and what I would ask her is: Why now? And I think the answer is very clear that this is a political calculation on her part. She's trying to walk back her support because she understands it could cost her politically," Hassan said, according to Politico.

"The question becomes: Whether she was surprised by it, which really calls into question her judgment. Or whether for most of the last year when she supported Donald Trump she was doing that because she had to politically and now she realizes that for political purposes, that will cost her," she said after a tour of a pin-making plant in Nashua, N.H..
