Hillary Clinton leads Donald Trump by an extraordinary 40 points in a new Washington Examiner poll of D.C. elites.
The survey of 400 "professional Washington insiders" who are registered voters, live in the Capitol area, watch the news and earn at least $30,000 a year, reveals:
- Hillary Clinton: 62 percent
- Donald Trump: 22 percent
- Gary Johnson: 3 percent
- Other candidate/Undecided/Not Voting: 14 percent
The poll — conducted for the Examiner by Echelon Insights, a Virginia-based research, analytics and digital intelligence firm — indicates "the Beltway class is far closer to Clinton than the rest of the country is," the newspaper said.
"While the former secretary of state and New York senator leads in almost all national polls, she averages well below 50 percent."
The poll's sampling included about 30 percent who identified themselves as conservatives, 30 percent as liberals and 40 percent as moderates.
Among those figures, Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee, won almost 90 percent of liberals, while Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, took only about 37 percent of conservatives.
The Examiner poll was conducted July 12–18 before Evan McMullin, a conservative independent, announced his candidacy. It has a margin of error or plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.
