Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani claims former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich is behind talk of an "intervention" to get Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump back on track.

"So first of all I find the word 'intervention' completely out of line," Giuliani said on the Fox Business "Mornings with Maria" show, according to The Hill. "That word, I think, honestly I love him dearly, but I think that word was used by Newt in a memo that got around."

Giuliani called "intervention" a "ridiculous word" to use in the current circumstances with respect to the Trump campaign.

"An intervention is for a drug addict and it's for someone who's an alcoholic and I've had to do them with people at times," he said. "There's nothing wrong with them, if that's the case. Donald Trump doesn't drink or smoke, by the way. We don't have that problem."

According to the former presidential candidate, he meets with Trump often to discuss issues and make suggestions.

"It is not that different than any campaign I have ever been in, including my own, in which I made changes probably 20 times," Giuliani said. "It's an evolving campaign."

Trump's remarks about a Muslim Gold Star family who appeared at the Democratic National Convention, where the father blasted Trump for his stance against Muslim immigrants, upset people on both sides of the aisle, leaving GOP leaders scrambling to provide damage control.

"A new level of panic hit the street," Scott Reed, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's chief strategist, told The Washington Post. "It's time for a serious reset."

"The current race is which of these two [Trump or Hillary Clinton] is the more unacceptable, because right now, neither of them is acceptable," Gingrich said to the Post. "Trump is helping her to win by proving he is more unacceptable than she is."

Gingrich said Trump needs to "learn some new skills," and that "he cannot win the presidency operating the way he is now."

Gingrich emailed a New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman Wednesday to deny that an intervention was in the works.
