Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are in a virtual tie for the presidency, according to a new Fox News poll, with Trump up by just 1 point over the former secretary of state.
In a two-way matchup:
- Trump: 46 percent;
- Clinton: 45 percent.
In a four-way ballot, including Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson and Green Party nominee Jill Stein:
- Trump: 41 percent;
- Clinton: 40 percent;
- Johnson: 8 percent;
- Stein: 3 percent.
The 1-point difference between Trump and Clinton falls into the 3-percentage point margin of error the poll, conducted from September 11-14 of 1,006 randomly chosen registered voters nationwide under the joint direction of Anderson Robbins Research Shaw & Company Research, carried.
The poll was released on Thursday and began Sunday evening, after Clinton suddenly left a 9/11 memorial event and her campaign released the news that she'd been diagnosed with pneumonia.
While comparisons are not available among likely voters, Fox reports, there is an apples-to-apples comparison among registered voters, and shows Clinton's support slipping since August:
- Beginning of August: Clinton 49-39 percent over Trump;
- End of August: 48-42;
- Currently: 46-43 percent.
The poll defines likely voters as those who say they will probably vote, and at this point, two groups who are Clinton's key backers, non-white and younger voters, are not saying they expect to vote.
"It's clear what the Clinton campaign needs to do, and that's make sure non-white and younger voters show up on Election Day," says Democratic pollster Chris Anderson. "If these traditional Democratic voters turn out at past rates, she probably wins."
Meanwhile, by key voting blocks:
- White evangelical Christians: Trump up by 52 points;
- Whites without a college degree: Trump up 31 points;
- Men: Trump up 13 points;
- Non-white voters: Clinton, up 51 points;
- Women: Clinton up 13 points;
- Voters in households earning less than $50,000: Clinton up 16 points.
And by party:
- Republicans: Trump, 80 percent;
- Democrats: Clinton, 80 percent;
- Independents: Trump, 36 percent; Clinton, 31 percent; Johnson, 16 percent; Stein, 7 percent.
The poll also found that seven in 10 voters are not happy with the way the government works, including 44 percent saying they're dissatisfied and 27 percent saying they are angry — and 57 percent who said the world is "going to hell in a handbasket."
