Economic analyst Stephen Moore called for a “hard line” on trade with China — including a tariff on some goods — to stop North Korea’s nuclear weapons program, rejecting the strategy would wreck the U.S. economy.

In an interview with “Newsmax Now” hosts Bill Tucker and Ellis Henican on Newsmax TV, Moore, a senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation and former Trump senior economic adviser, said “drastic times require drastic measures.”

“You're talking about a country – it's not even a country, it's some tyrant who has access to a bomb that can be dropped on Japan but more power than the Hiroshima bomb that was dropped during World War II,” said Moore, also a Newsmax Finance Insider.

“China has the power to take away the bomb,” he continued. “They're the only ones who can stop North Korea right now.

“So do I want to take a really hard line with China? Yes. They depend on access to U.S. markets for their economy to perform and we should simply say, ‘look, if you want to be a member of the civilized world and you want to be trading partners with nations like the United States, it is on you – since you enabled this weapon to be built – to take it away.’”

He said the policy could include getting “very tough with them and we say… on certain goods… we're going to place a tariff on you unless you behave yourself.’”

“There's no question about it,” he added. “China wants North Korea to have a nuclear weapon. They feel it gives them more leverage in that part of the hemisphere and we can't live with that.”

“It seems like too many liberals in the United States are like modern day Neville Chamberlains,” Moore declared. “They're just appeasing China and North Korea instead of taking the hard line.”
