Also known by the name cobalamin, vitamin B12 is one of eight B vitamins. They all work to help assist the function of the brain and nervous system. They also help with the formation of blood.

Most adults should get about 2.4 milligrams of vitamin B12 daily, according to doctors at Harvard University, who cited a National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey that found 3.2 percent of adults older than 50 "have a seriously low B12 level" while up to 20 percent have a slight deficiency.

Here are five ways vitamin B12 helps people with joint pain and arthritis.

1. Many who have rheumatoid arthritis use NSAIDs for pain relief, but extended use can cause stomach upset and bleeding, especially in the digestive tract. Vitamin B12 is essential for the body produce new and healthy red blood cells, which helps in the battle against anemia that many rheumatoid arthritis sufferers face, according to Livestrong.

2. Vitamin B12 can also reduce the risk of broken bones. According to the Arthritis Foundation, "Vitamin B12 reduces homocysteine, an amino acid found at high levels in people with rheumatoid arthritis. Even moderately elevated homocysteine is associated with an increased risk of fractures in older adults."

3. Vitamin B12, particularly taken in supplements, can help aid in nutrition deficiencies for those who may not be able to absorb enough in food.

4. Vitamin B deficiencies are prevalent in those who have rheumatoid arthritis. By taking more of it, those patients can fight free radicals that damage cells and contribute to such problems, WebMD said.

5. Some research suggests vitamin B12 injections can help with bursitis, which is an inflammation of the pads that cushion your joints, called bursa. Such pain occurs in hips, knees, elbows, shoulders, and even heels.
