Scott Walker 2016: 7 Key Political Positions of GOP Presidential Hopeful

By    |   Friday, 26 December 2014 05:39 PM

Scott Walker was elected governor of Wisconsin in 2010, won a recall election in 2012, and was just re-elected in the 2014 midterms. In a blue state, he handily defeated his opponent, Democrat Mary Burke, even though she had the full support of labor unions intent on removing Walker from office. While he has not yet made a formal announcement, Scott Walker is ranked seventh in a lineup of 11 GOP 2016 presidential hopefuls by Real Clear Politics.

Here are seven key political positions of GOP presidential hopeful Scott Walker:

1. Less government dependency:
Scott Walker's perspective for the state of Wisconsin illustrates his vision for America and this includes a more self-sufficient populace.

"The American dream isn't about dependency on the government — the American dream is that what's great about this country is it doesn't matter what your parents do for a living, what class you were born into, or where you came from. In America you can do anything and be anything no matter what your background. You have equal opportunity, but the outcome is up to you."

2. Fiscal conservative: Scott Walker is not afraid to make tough but necessary budget cuts. However, he also writes in his book "Unintimidated: A Governor’s Story And A Nation’s Challenge" about the need for Republicans to not always be the bearer of bad news, reports Right Wisconsin. Instead, Walker offers a "hopeful, optimistic alternative to austerity" which involves a smaller government that is "more responsive, more efficient, and more effective."

3. Principles: Scott Walker does not believe Republicans need to moderate conservative principles in order to win elections. "If our principles were the problem, then why are so many Republican governors winning elections by campaigning on them?" Walker wrote in The Wall Street Journal. Walker believes Republicans can show how conservative policies offer solutions to Americans to "reduce dependency and create hope, opportunity, and upward mobility for all citizens.

4. Gay marriage and abortion: A recent letter from Walker to Wisconsin Family Action illustrates his current position on these social issues. Walker wrote that he supports marriage between a man and a woman and will defend Wisconsin's ban on gay marriage. He is pro-life and Walker prohibited abortion coverage in Wisconsin health care plans and cut state funding for abortion providers.

5. Second Amendment: Scott Walker supports gun rights and in the same letter to Wisconsin Family Action he wrote, "I am a firm defender of the Second Amendment. My Rating with the NRA is an A+."

6. Immigration: According to Politico, Scott Walker has said that he supports a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants but that people waiting in line should have "first preference."

“We just have a broken system. And to me, if somebody wants to come in and live the American dream and work hard … we should have a system that works and lets people in,”
said Walker.

7. Energy: Scott Walker supports domestic production of oil and gas and he has lobbied for the approval of the Keystone XL pipeline. In addition, by signing Americans for Prosperity's No Climate Tax Pledge, he has demonstrated he is against climate change legislation that increases taxes.
