Retirement: 6 Facts About Association of Mature American Citizens

By    |   Thursday, 04 June 2015 10:00 AM

The Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC) was founded when New York family businessman Dan Weber sought to create and offer an alternative and conservative option to the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP).

According to its website, AMAC seeks to “speak out for the traditional American values of faith, family, and freedom” while coming out to fight “runaway taxes, excessive government involvement in our day-to-day lives, and the erosion of accountability at all levels of government.”

Below are listed 6 facts about AMAC:

1. Although AMAC was officially launched in 2007, the vision behind it began in 2006 when founder Dan Weber became disgruntled with the other major seniors’ organizations because he felt they leaned too far to the political left and did not represent the conservative values of millions of Americans.

2. After the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), which is also known as ObamaCare, came onto the scene in 2008, AMAC saw its membership skyrocket from 40,000 members to 1.1 million members, according to the Wall Street Journal.

3. AMAC allows its members to have AARP-like discounts while appealing to members who deeply care about political issues such as Social Security, taxes, limited government, immigration, and national debt, according to Sound Mind Investing.

4. People younger than 50 are allowed to become AMAC members, although they won’t receive all of the benefits that 50+ members enjoy. Membership costs $16 per year, but only one membership per couple need be purchased.

5. AMAC chooses the political and social issues it prioritizes or advocates for based upon the direct feedback and concerns of its members.

6. AMAC’s initial founding costs and funding were provided by founder Dan Weber, and its current funding comes from membership fees and income from companies who advertise in its official magazine, AMAC Advantage.
