Pomegranates: Other Benefits Besides Arthritis Treatment

People have long associated the pomegranate, a fruit native to Persia, with health, fertility, and eternal life in legend and mythology.

The healthful benefits of the pomegranate, however, may not be so fictional. In addition to helping with the symptoms of arthritis, the fruit may also work wonders for heart and blood diseases and cancers, according to Dr. Joel Fuhrman.

Studies have shown that pomegranates contain the most of every type of antioxidant over other fruits, such as strawberries and blueberries. Antioxidants are important for keeping a strong immune system and combating inflammation.

Unique to the fruit is a component called punicalagin, which is beneficial to heart and blood health, according to Fuhrman. The compound has shown to decrease blood pressure as well as increase the rate at which the body removes atherosclerosis, or heart blockages.

Pomegranates seem to also have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects. "The use of juice, peel and oil have also been shown to possess anticancer activities, including interference with tumor cell proliferation, cell cycle, invasion and angiogenesis," said a study in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology. "These may be associated with plant based anti-inflammatory effects."

A study published by the National Institutes of Health found pomegranate caused a slower division of cancerous cells regarding prostate cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, and skin cancer, and concluded, "It is anticipated that in-depth research into the anticancer activities of naturally occurring compounds would enable one day to develop a cocktail of such molecules for effective prevention cancers."

Additionally, the pomegranate juice’s phytochemical compounds stimulate the release of serotonin in the brain, which can combat depression, Fuhrman said.

Pomegranates are high in Vitamin C — as in 40 percent of the recommended daily intake — and fiber, which can provide an immunity boost and combat feelings of hunger, Shape reported.

Medical Daily notes when purchasing pomegranate juice, make sure to look for brands that are 100 percent pure, not mixed with anything else.

Though the pomegranate with its tough skin and staining seeds, called arils, can sometimes be a pain to prepare, the struggle for its health benefits may be worthwhile.
