International Travel: 6 Tips for Packing Like a Pro

By    |   Thursday, 17 Aug 2017 11:05 AM

Packing could end up being the most important factor when traveling internationally. Many times, travelers will realize too late the extra baggage they took along, causing strained muscles and extra charges.

Everyone has different needs, but anyone can become a pro when it comes to packing for a trip abroad. Here are six tips for packing like a pro on your next international journey:

1. List items for packing — Instead of grabbing something here and something there, list the things you will need for your trip. Items you need can depend on the length of the trip or the weather. Check off the items as you gather them, Frommer’s advises.

2. Check with the airline on baggage information — On some international flights, travelers are allowed up to two 50-pound bags free of charge. A carry-on, however, is still a good idea because your baggage might not arrive on the same flight. Divide items evenly if checking more than one bag so you will have what you need incase the other bag doesn’t arrive at the same time.

3. Don’t bring things you don’t need — Research your destination to find out if you can buy personal items there. Also, voltage and plug types might be different abroad. Buying an adapter often solves the problem. Avoid packing jewelry and other valuables. Tourists make good targets for thieves, Caroline Costello points out in Smarter Travel. Unnecessary gadgets, such as DVD players, coffee makers, or other devices, only take up room, and travelers often find they never use them.

4. Bring the right amount of clothing — Before going on a trip, take note of the clothes you wear in a week. You can make a list, then reduce the number of outfits you’ll need. Bring lots of neutral colors for mixing and matching. In most cases, you won’t have to change your clothes that often when traveling abroad.

5. Pack shoes that can be worn with different outfits — Limit it to three pairs for dress, casual, and comfort wear, CNN Travel recommends. Pack shoes with soles to the side of the case around the edge and keep the center for clothes. Stuff socks and undergarments into shoes to save space and help keep the shape of the shoes.

6. Pack really light — An alternative method is traveling light while on an international trip, according to Rick Steves’ Europe. Steves recommends one carry-on-size bag for transatlantic flights that is limited to 20 pounds. Travelers walk with their bags more than they think, and going casual and simple is the best way. You can buy many things you might need later at various locations.
