Mississippi is consistently considered one of the best states for hunting, thanks to the very fertile delta region, lots of Wildlife Management Areas, and plenty of hunting lodges.
In addition, about 80 percent of Mississippi is privately owned, with many property owners willing to grant permission to interested hunters.
According to the Mississippi Sportsman, some of the best areas to hunt are the South Delta, Mahannah, Twin Oaks, and Sunflower.

Here are a few top spots for hunting in Mississippi:
1. Delta
Mississippi’s Delta region is considered one of the best places in the state to do a ton of quality hunting. The fertile soils attract a variety of animals, including some of the largest deer found in the Magnolia State.
However, the area can pose a challenge to hunters as it floods somewhat easily, which is more beneficial to the deer than it is to the hunter. In North Delta, lots of waterfowl can be found, while South Delta is where it’s at for some of the biggest deer in the area.
2. Mahannah Wildlife Management Area
The Mahannah consistently produces big bucks due to its fertile soil and therefore lots of food for deer to munch on. It’s located in Warren and Issaquena counties, with Vicksburg being the closest notable city.

Total acreage is about 13,000 acres, and is part of the state’s delta. Duck hunters should definitely check out Mahannah, as “approximately 1200 acres of open farmland are managed for waterfowl each year,”
according to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries & Parks.
Mahannah is considered the “crown jewel of the Mississippi WMA system” and has proven to be the place to hunt for big bucks on public land. Although it’s a draw, hunters who get drawn will have the chance to pull a quality buck.
3. Sunflower
Interested in squirrel hunting? Sunflower is a great place for it as well as rabbit hunting. The area has 60,000 acres of bottomland hardwoods and it’s highly recommended for its sheer size and good habitats for these smaller game as well as deer.
