Here's a list of five animals to hunt in the spring in Louisiana:

1. Wild Turkey
The season for hunting the wild turkey of Louisiana begins towards the end of March and lasts most years for 30 days only. Shooting times are a half-hour before sunrise and a half-hour after sunset. Turkeys are widely distributed around the state and can be found in wooded areas and brush land in the main. The daily limit is one turkey per bag and the individual season quota is two per person. Still hunting only is allowed and the taking of hens is strictly prohibited.

2. Squirrel
While the season for hunting squirrel begins in the mid-fall time, it stretches into the early spring in every area, closing usually on the last day of February. Squirrel are distributed evenly throughout the state with the grey and fox (red) in abundant numbers during the season. In some areas there is a limited season open for the month of May, mainly in selected WMAs. Bag limits for both species of squirrel is eight per day with a possession limit of 24 per person.

3. Rabbit
Hunting for rabbit stretches in early spring also and like squirrel hunting the season ends on Feb. 28. The bag limit of eight per person is a constant regardless of hunting for the cottontail or the swamp rabbit. Shooting hours for rabbit are from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset.

4. Pheasant
Shooting of pheasant coincides with the season of shooting quail. Pheasant are found in all areas of the state but mainly at forest edges and in deep scrub land. There is no bag limit on numbers taken neither is there a possession quota per person. Hunting is in daylight hours and officially recognised hunting dogs only are to be used during a hunt.

5. Nutria
This invasive species of water rat is in season from early winter to the end of February. In the Atchafalaya Delta, Salvador/Timken, Pointe Aux Chenes, and Pass a Loutre, nutria may be taken until March 31 as they do damage to swamp lands and numbers need to be controlled. In all areas there is a daily bag limit of five, and all shooting must be done during daylight hours only.
