By    |   Tuesday, 03 January 2017 11:42 AM

Modern golf as we know it is said to have originated in Scotland centuries ago, and today the game is widely enjoyed in the West. However, golfers looking for an exotic far east golf experience need look no further than these highly ranked courses.

1. The Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club, Hong Kong — Sometimes called Hong Kong’s Pebble Beach, Four Seasons magazine says this course is worth a visit if only for the dramatic seaside views. It was named by Asian Golf Monthly as the best in Hong Kong.

2. Canyon Course at Blue Canyon, Phuket, Thailand According to Smart Traveler, this is the most famous course in all of Thailand. Blue Canyon is home to two, award-winning courses surrounded by both mountains and sea.

3. Alpine Golf and Sports Club, Bangkok, Thailand — This course is a bit off the beaten path, but Smart Traveler says it is well worth the visit. Once a former flat rice paddy field, this beautiful course is regarded as one of Thailand’s most challenging and played host to two Johnnie Walker Classics.

4. Nirwana Bali Golf Club, Bali — This 18-hole course was designed by Greg Norman and is situated along Bali’s dramatic southwest coast. With rice paddies as hazards, the course is said to be one of the world’s most challenging, and it is certainly one of the most photographed, says Forbes.

5. The Dunes at Shenzhou Peninsula, Hainan, China — According to Forbes, the Dunes is home to three of China’s best new courses, and Hainan is a rapidly developing resort region. Designed by PGA legend Tom Weiskopf, each course plays long and fast. The long greens are a welcome relief from the rugged dunes and constantly changing ocean breezes.

6. The Els Club Teluk, Langkawi, Malaysia — The laid back, relaxed island of Langkawi can be the perfect spot for a special day of golf at this course, situated in a lush tropical rainforest. The course is replete with native flora and fauna.
