Maryland is one of the 13 original colonies located at the center of the Eastern Seaboard. The state is small in size but it is not short on diversity and beauty. It has both low-lying areas including the Chesapeake Bay area and the Eastern Shore, where the state leads the production of blue crabs and its forested Appalachians are abundant in mountains and foothills. 1. Francis Scott Key wrote “The Star Spangled Banner”
after seeing the raising of the American flag at Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland. The fort has been turned into a national monument, but was used to defend the area from the British troops during the War of 1812.
2. Maryland helped lead the way for true freedom of religion in the United States. In April 1649, colonist voted into law the Maryland Toleration Act, granting freedom of worship to Christians. The law was repeated in 1692, but was among the first statutes granting religious liberty of any kind in the country.

St. Michaels, Maryland, is known as “The town that fooled the British.” Residents of the town knew the British were about to attack on August 10, 1813, and they turned off all of their lights. Lanterns were attached to the tops of trees and the masts of ships, causing the British to overshoot the town. Only one house was struck during the invasion and it became known as the “Cannonball House.”

4. As of 2013 it is
illegal for any person in Maryland to attend the movies in the company of a lion.
5. King Williams School became the first school in the U.S. to open in 1696. Maryland is also home to the first dental school in the U.S., opened at the University of Maryland.
6. Harriett Tubman escaped slavery in the Cambridge area and became a conductor of the Underground Railroad, rescuing family and friends in the 1850s.
