The Common Core State Standards Initiative, known as Common Core was developed by education officials with the aim of setting quantifiable benchmarks in language arts and math.
The standards have been a source of discussion for every group involved in the American education system since they were finalized in 2009.
Many parents claim Common Core standards are too difficult, too simple, too intrusive, or simply too confusing. Here are five quotes that reveal some of the feelings parents have regarding Common Core requirements for their children:

"The parents are tired and they're ready for people to start listening, and we don't want this. Our kids are suffering because of it," said Kelly Watson, who noticed a change in her 8-year-old daughter since the standards were introduced.
"Hate it, absolutely hate it," said Nikki Tashiro. "I want Common Core gone. I hate that the first three weeks of school, my 6-year-old asked me if she could be a dropout. She won't be in public school next year if Common Core continues. Education is so important, but to me this is not education. This is child abuse."
"Our grandchildren are excelling. Please do not pull a better way of teaching so that we old folks can maintain the status quo," said Susan V.
Urgent: Tell Us What You Think About Common Core in Schools
Anyta Brown, a grandmother of Brooklyn middle and high school students, is a supporter of Common Core, saying, "They find it a little challenging, but we need to change the basic way of educating our children."
A heart-felt quote was written by a parent on her son's Common Core assignment and returned to the teacher. The parent wrote:
"Dear Jack: Don't feel bad. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Electronics Engineering, which included extensive study in differential equations and other higher mathematics. Even I cannot explain the Common Core Mathematics approach, nor get the answer correct. In the real world, simplification is valued over complication. Therefore, 427-316 = 111. The answer is solved in under 5 seconds – 111. The (Common Core) process used is ridiculous and would result in termination if used.
Sincerely, Frustrated Parent."
