5 Beliefs That Set Church Of God Apart From Other Christian Denominations

By    |   Thursday, 02 April 2015 12:29 PM EDT

There are many different Christian denominations that use the name Church of God, but the largest, with more than 7 million members worldwide, is the Church of God with headquarters in Cleveland, Tenn.

These Church of God Christians adhere to basic Christian beliefs, but their Pentecostal interpretations make their denomination distinctive from mainstream Christianity.

Here are five beliefs that set apart Church of God Christians from other Christians:

Prayer Changes Your Brain in 4 Amazing Ways

1.
The Church of God believes "that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God and that repentance is commanded of God for all and necessary for forgiveness of sins," according to ChurchofGod.org, and that "justification, regeneration, and the new birth are wrought by faith in the blood of Jesus Christ."

2. After salvation comes sanctification, through "faith in the blood of Christ, through the Word, and by the Holy Ghost," the Church website says. According to a credentialed source from the Church's international offices, "This allows for any one of at least three views: 1. An instantaneous definite second work of grace (the destruction of the sinful nature), 2. A definite work of grace followed by a lifelong process, or 3. That sanctification is, in fact, a lifelong process following conversion."

3. Church of God Christians believe in baptism with the Holy Ghost, which follows sanctification and is revealed by an experience of speaking in tongues. This act empowers believers for their Christian service.

4. The experience of speaking in tongues is evidence of the presence of the Holy Ghost after sanctification.

5.
In lifestyle, Church of God Christians expect members to abstain from all alcohol, tobacco, and recreational drugs. Jewelry and makeup are not taboo, although moderation is encouraged. Divorce and remarriage are also acceptable in certain situations, even for ministers.
