6 Christian Denominations With Most Liberal Stance on Global Warming

By    |   Thursday, 07 May 2015 06:39 AM EDT

Many denominations of Christianity are now adopting liberal stances on global warming. They’re even taking action to help the planet. Christian global warming initiatives range from stock divestitures to calls for new federal regulations.

In these initiatives, the term global warming is often used interchangeably with climate change. Actually, climate change refers to a long-term trend of increasing global temperatures. Global warming, however, is the cause of climate changes such as heat waves, droughts, and other extreme weather, according to Skeptical Science.

Leadership at national church levels is important in raising awareness about both problems. In a study of U.S. residents who attend church regularly, the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI), found that only 11 percent hear about global warming from their preachers "often."

Among white evangelist Protestants, the number is even smaller. In this traditionally conservative group, only five percent hear about global warming from their preachers “often.” Likewise, five percent of white Catholics, 10 percent of white mainline Protestants, 19 percent of black Protestants, and 22 percent of Hispanic Catholics are “often” told about global warming in church.

Furthermore, 77 percent of white evangelist Protestants blame the severity of recent natural disasters to biblical “end times” while only 49 percent blame “climate change,” according to the PRRI survey.

Denominations pursuing global warming issues run the gamut from traditionally liberal groups like the United Church of Christ (UCC) to organizations such as the Roman Catholic Church and Southern Baptist Convention, which are conservative on matters like birth control and adoption.

Here are six of the denominations with the most liberal stances on global warming:

1. United Church of Christ

In June of 2013, the UCC became the first major religious group in the U.S. to vote in favor of divesting itself of stocks from fossil fuel companies, as detailed in a UCC press release.

2. Unitarian Universalist Association

In June of 2014, the Unitarian Universalist Association followed suit, issuing a news release about a just passed resolution calling for divestment from fossil fuel stocks in the UUA Common Endowment Fund (UUCEF).

3. Roman Catholic Church

Back in 2001, the U.S. Conference of (Roman) Catholic Bishops got together to talk about global climate change. They then published a response to questions and challenges surrounding global warming, according catholicclimatecovenant.org. Recently, U.S. Catholic archbishops have voiced support to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for "a national standard limiting carbon pollution from power plants."

4. United Church of the Brethren

Some of the so-called "peace religions" also adhere to a liberal stance on global warming. In a 2001 position paper, the Brethren already foresaw dire damage ahead, writing that, "in recently revised estimates scientists conclude that if greenhouse emissions (produced mainly by burning fossil fuels) are not curtailed, the Earth's average surface temperatures may increase from 2.7 degrees to nearly 111 degrees Fahrenheit by the end of the century.”

5. Southern Baptist Convention

Meanwhile, the Southern Baptist Convention has issued a "Declaration on the Environment and Climate Change." In the document, this branch of the Baptist church concedes that, among other things, "Christian moral convictions and our Southern Baptist doctrine demand our environmental stewardship."

6. Presbyterian Church U.S.A.

Another pioneer, the Presbyterian Church U.S.A., came out with detailed recommendations in 2008 for a comprehensive set of regulatory and legislative policies. These are aimed at reducing the earth's temperature to 2 degrees Celcius or less from pre-industrial levels.
