Chris Christie, governor of New Jersey, is a possible presidential candidate in 2016, and he’s well-known for not holding back his opinions and thoughts.

But despite his open style, here are seven things you might not have known about Christie’s life outside of politics:

1. Christopher James Christie was born Sept. 6, 1962, in Newark, N.J., with roots in Ireland (on his father’s side) and Sicily (on his mother’s side), and he was raised in nearby Livingston, according to Biography.com.

2. Christie is married to Mary Pat Foster and they have four children, Andrew, Sarah, Patrick, and Bridget, according to a New Jersey government website.

3. New Jersey-born-and-bred Christie makes no apologies for being a fan of the Dallas Cowboys and keeps a Roger Staubach-autographed football in his office. “My father was a Giants fan and I used to remember watching him when I was 8, 9 years old and every Sunday he would watch the Giants and yell at the TV set. I used to think to myself why would I want to root for a team that makes you angry?” Christie told The Dallas Morning News. On the other hand, he said, “The Cowboys were really good.”

4. He received a bachelor of arts in political science from the University of Delaware in 1984 and a law degree from Seton Hall in 1987. Christie was admitted to the bar in New Jersey and for the U.S. District Court for New Jersey, Ballotpedia reported. He joined the law firm Dughi, Hewit, and Palatucci, becoming a partner in 1993. The following year, he was elected a Freeholder of Morris County.

5. Christie credits his mother, Sondra Christie, with his views on politics. “She told me that love without respect was always fleeting, but that respect could grow into real and lasting love,” he told Biography.com. “Now, of course, she was talking about women. But I have learned over time that it applies just as much to leadership. In fact, I think that advice applies to America more than ever today."

6. Christie told audience members at a town-hall meeting his mother, on her deathbed, told him he should get back to work because “nothing between them had been left unsaid,” The New York Times reported.

7. Bruce Springsteen is a liberal, but conservative Christie really likes his music. “Christie is known for his almost perfect attendance at Springsteen concerts, having once even flown to London to see a show,” according to Bob Ingle and Michael Symons, authors of the biography “Chris Christie: The Inside Story of His Rise to Power.”

“He ordered flags at state buildings to be lowered to half-staff when E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons died in 2011, and he’ll sometimes crank up a Bruce song between meetings at the governor’s office.”
