Frantic Search for Survivors after Nicaragua Mine Cave-in

Friday, 29 Aug 2014 02:01 PM

Rescue teams in Nicaragua were working frantically Friday to try to reach at least 24 workers trapped after a cave-in at a gold mine, officials said.

Two miners made it out alive on their own by digging through the debris, said Martha Lagos of the local disaster prevention committee. But, Lagos added, at least 24 others remain buried.

Police, soldiers and other miners were taking part in the operation in a remote region in the north of the country.

Authorities said they were trying to confirm a report that one miner had died, noting that the incident happened in a hard to reach area with poor communication.

"Supposedly there are dead but that is not confirmed," Lagos said.

Footage broadcast earlier by a local TV station had appeared to show the body of a dead miner being recovered.

The cave-in, blamed on heavy rain, happened early Thursday in the village of El Comal located close to the town of Bonanza, which is perched on the side of a hill in a region that is home to Nicaragua's biggest gold mines.

"You can hear that there are people alive because we heard voices," Lagos had earlier told the website 19 Digital.

The mouth of the mine caved in because of a landslide triggered by heavy downpours.

Desperate relatives initially tried to dig through to the trapped miners but the land was too unstable, news reports said.

Word of the collapse only emerged late Thursday because the site is so remote, Lagos said.
