US Diplomat: More US-Cuba Talks Planned for This Month

Tuesday, 03 Feb 2015 10:35 AM

The top American diplomat for Latin America says she'll meet with top Cuban officials again this month to talk about restoring the U.S. Embassy in Havana.

Roberta Jacobson tells a Senate panel she cited several barriers to the re-establishment of diplomatic relations during discussions in the Cuban capital in January.

These include restrictions on U.S. diplomats, shipments to the U.S. Interests Section and Cuban access to that building.

Concrete progress was limited in last month's historic talks. But Jacobson says the sides intend to talk again in February.

Talks are likely to be in Washington.

Tuesday's hearing is being chaired by Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, a critic of President Barack Obama's diplomatic outreach to Cuba.

He told Jacobson he didn't think the new policy would prompt greater freedom in Cuba.
