Fidel Castro Meets with Brazilian Theologian: Report

Wednesday, 28 Jan 2015 07:07 AM

Fidel Castro held a meeting with Brazilian theologian who advocates liberation theology, the state newspaper Granma said Wednesday.

The report came as Cubans are hungry for news about their 88-year-old former president and revolutionary leader who has not been seen in public for more than a year.

The paper said Castro met Tuesday afternoon with Frei Betto of Brazil and they discussed several domestic and international issues, the daily Granma said.

But the story, on the paper's online edition, did not feature of a photograph of Castro.

On Monday Castro broke weeks of silence on a historic rapprochement between Washington and Havana, implicitly endorsing it even as he expressed an abiding distrust of his old foe.

That silence had fueled rumors on social media and in some foreign media that Castro was dead.

Those rumors are also being nourished by the fact that Castro has not been seen in public since January 8, 2014.

And the last photo of him goes back to last August.

Castro made his commentary on the planned restoration of ties with Washington in a letter attributed to him.
