Chile Gay Man's Killer Gets Life Sentence

By    |   Tuesday, 29 Oct 2013 07:59 AM

A Chilean man was sentenced to life behind bars for his role in the brutal March 2012 slaying of a homosexual man in a Santiago park, the BBC reported.

A three-judge panel imposed the sentence Monday on Patricio Ahumada Garay, one of four men convicted in the March 2012 attack on Daniel Zamudio, 24, who was kicked and beaten with a rock and burned with cigarettes.

Zamudio, whose leg was broken in the attack, also had swastikas carved into his skin. He succumbed to his injuries three and a half weeks later.

Three other men have already received sentences of between seven and 15 years imprisonment for their roles in the attack.

Jaime Silva, a lawyer representing the Zamudio family, applauded the verdict and sentences.

“We are very happy,” he told The Santiago Times. “We wanted the case to be declared a cruel and premeditated homicide, which it was, we wanted all four involved to be considered as direct actors, which they were, and we wanted them to be punished with the highest sentences for which our legislation allows.”

Zamudio’s murder made him a symbol of Chile’s gay-rights movement and led to passage of a landmark anti-discrimination measure last year.

The legislation, which had been blocked in Chile’s Congress since 2005, increases sentences for bias-motivated crimes and enables people to file law suits against suspected  anti-gay discrimination.
