The abrupt resignation Thursday of Iraq’s embittered prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, ended a challenge to the man selected to replace him. But who is Haider al-Abadi and how will he save the country from the brutal terrorist army of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria?
 
The new prime minister like Maliki, is a Shiite but is viewed as a leader able to draw support from Iraqi Sunnis and Kurds. Unanswered in the government shakeup is the question of who will militarily defeat the ISIS? Forming a government of national unity will be an enormous challenge because Abadi will have to balance expectations from the United States and Iran, both of which have signaled support for him, and build confidence among disenfranchised groups. He will also have to rally the nation to repel the ISIS. But he will have little time to do those things.
