Egypt Court Overturns Death Sentence Against Brotherhood Chief

Thursday, 12 Feb 2015 06:39 AM

Egypt's highest appeals court overturned sentences of death and life against 36 members of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, including Mohamed Badie, the group's top leader.

The convictions were linked to an August 2013 attack on a police station in southern Egypt in which two policemen and a civilian were killed, according to the state-run Middle East News Agency. More than 100 other Islamists had been sentenced to death in absentia in the same case. The appeals court also ordered the retrial of the 36 people, the Foreign Ministry said in an e-mailed statement Thursday, calling the verdict the latest reflection of the judiciary's independence.

Egyptian authorities have cracked down on the Brotherhood since the military led the ouster of President Mohamed Mursi, who hails from the Islamist group, in 2013. Hundreds of Mursi's backers have been killed and thousands others put on trial.

Local and international human rights groups have criticized the mass death and life sentences in connection to the attack on the police station, accusing Egyptian authorities of restoring the police state that prevailed under President Hosni Mubarak, who was toppled after a popular uprising in 2011.
