Mohammed Morsi Named New President of Egypt

CAIRO — The head of Egypt's election commission announced today that Mohammed Morsi won Egypt's presidential run-off election and will be installed as the first democratically elected president of Egypt.

In his announcement, Farouk Sultan talked about a "campaign of skepticism" that has tried to taint the election commission's process of investigating complaints and determining the winner of the June 16-17 run-off between Ahmed Shafiq and Mohammed Morsi.

The commission, he says, was "quite patient" in going through the process of verifying the results of the vote and is "confident" that its decision is the right one.

Mohammed Morsi was the candidate of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice party. He has won, said Sultan, with 51 percent of the vote.

Ahmed Shafiq was the last prime minister under former president Hosni Mubarak, an ally of both the United States and Israel, who was forced from office last year in the Arab Spring uprising.
