Florida Lawmakers Say Venezuela Sponsors Terror

Thursday, 29 Oct 2009 09:21 PM

A bipartisan pair of South Florida congressmen introduced a resolution urging U.S. officials to add Venezuela to the list of “state sponsors of terrorism.”

Ron Klein, a Democrat from Boca Raton, and Connie Mack, a Republican from Fort Myers, cited Venezuela’s alleged ties to the FARC, an insurgency group in Colombia, and Hezbollah, a militant group based in Lebanon.

Mack claimed that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has given money, weapons and safe haven to these groups.

He and Klein also cited Venezuelan ties to Iran.

The designation is significant because it can lead to economic sanctions and discourage travel and tourism to nations deemd a sponsor of terrorism.

Mack reflects the view of many conservative Republicans in Congress. Klein reflects the prevailing view of South Florida’s large Jewish community, which sees Hezbollah as a threat to Israel.
