MOSCOW — A man’s body was found in the landing gear bay of a plane that arrived in Moscow from Italy Thursday. Investigators believe the victim was a stowaway who died from exposure to cold temperatures at high altitude, RT.com reported.

After blood drops were found during a post-landing inspection of the right landing gear, authorities conducted a more thorough search of the bay, where they discovered the body.

Russian aviation authorities said they would consult with their Italian counterparts on how the pre-flight inspection and servicing of the plane was carried out in Remini, Italy, where the flight originated. The plane belongs to I Fly, a Russian charter airline.

Russian investigators were working to determine the identity of the victim.

With little oxygen and temperatures reaching 67 degrees Fahrenheit , hiding in landing gear is a grueling and often fatal ordeal for stowaways.
