WW II Italian Resistance Fighter's Diary Code Broken

The intricately coded content of an Italian resistance fighter’s secret diary has finally been cracked — some 68 years after the end of World War II.

Antonio Marzi, a 17-year-old partisan, began the diary in 1944 after the Germans stormed his village, Udine, in northeastern Italy, London’s Daily Telegraph reports.

He used verse by Italian poet Aleardo Aleardi to create a code for his descriptions of the occupation, but, years later, was unable to remember exactly how he’d created it.

Historians were also stumped at the diary’s wording, which consisted of strings of letters split into five-letter blocks.

Two years ago, German computer scientist Armin Krauss took a crack at the mystery lettering.

He rightly suspected the first five-letter block at the start of each line was not encoded, but a reference to which word from the poem was being used as a keyword, to turn ordinary language into code.

He also excluded the last five-letter-block in each line and was then able to read the diary.

“The local prefect has gone. Some police units are unavailable. The Germans have disarmed the police and the militia. Public offices are closed, and activity in the city is stopped,’’ Marzi wrote.
Towards the end of the war, he commented: “The Germans are very depressed.’’

In one of the last entries, he noted the Allied liberation of Italy, writing: “Great enthusiasm. From tomorrow the city starts to live a normal life again.’’

Marzi died in 2007, before his diary was finally decoded.
