Greece, EU Discuss Four-year Reform Plan: Athens

Wednesday, 04 Feb 2015 09:00 AM

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras discussed plans to "jointly" create a four-year reform plan for Greece during talks with European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker on Wednesday in Brussels, a government source said.

Tsipras and Juncker discussed a "bridge agreement" that would give Athens time to formulate "a radical plan of reforms in key areas such as corruption, tax evasion and strengthening public adminstration", the source said.

Greece's new hard-left government this week has been seeking allies in Europe to carry out its campaign pledge to renegotiate the country's 240-billion-euro ($273-billion) EU-IMF bailout and erase over half its enormous debt.

In the Brussels talks, "there was reference to a bridge agreement to ensure a transitionary period giving air to the Greek economy and society", the source said.

"The purpose of this bridge agreement is to give time to jointly create a four-year plan for the period 2015 to 2018."

Tsipras also pledged to maintain fiscal balance but said Greece would no longer respect the goal of annually producing a "monstrous" budget surplus of 4.5 percent, which was imposed by its international creditors.

"The Greek prime minister said Europe should not insist on a mistake that perpetuates the vicious circle of recession and debt in Greece and Europe," the source added.
