Jihadist Mastermind Identified After Hostage Escape

Security forces say they have identified the terrorist who masterminded the kidnapping of two Malaysian men in the Philippines last year. One of the hostages escaped earlier this month by unshackling himself with a fork. The other, his cousin, is missing.

Malaysian and Philippine authorities are searching for Mohd Amin Bacho, 30, described as a bomb expert and cruel killer with ties to the Abu Sayyaf organization, an Asian jihadist group known for kidnappings and large ransom demands, Malaysia’s Star Online newspaper reported Thursday.

A senior Malaysian counterterror official said that Tung Wee Jie, 26, who escaped from his abductors Aug. 4, picked Amin out of a lineup. Investigators believe Amin collaborated with six Abu Sayyaf members to kidnap the cousins, Jie and Tung Wee Wei, 34, in the Philippines last year.

Gunmen grabbed the cousins from their family plantation in mid-November and took them to another location where they were kept chained in a bamboo hut for much of their captivity.

The jihadists demanded a ransom of $230,000 which they later reduced to $46,000. But no ransom was ever paid, Fox News reports.

The cousins were later separated after Wei became sick. The kidnappers claimed they had taken him to the hospital.

Moments after Jie escaped, he flagged down a policeman and told him he believed Wei had died from illness in captivity, AFP reported Aug. 6.

Malaysian officials say they cannot confirm that Wei is dead, while their Philippine counterparts plan to launch a search for him.
