Eleven Injured in Meat-Cleaver Rampage on Hong Kong Bus

By    |   Thursday, 01 Aug 2013 04:29 PM

A man attacked passengers on a company bus in Hong Kong Wednesday with a meat cleaver, reportedly slicing off a woman’s finger and injuring at least 10 other people, the BBC reported.

There were 20 people on the bus at the time. The man was subdued by passengers and was later arrested by police. The assailant “suddenly attacked a few of the female colleagues and a male colleague who were sitting on the back rows of the bus a few minutes after it set off," police inspector Kelvin Ip told reporters.

The motive for the attack was unclear, but the South China Morning Post reported that the stabber had already been let go by his employer and that it was his last day on the job. Police said the man had no previous history of mental illness.

Police recovered at the scene a blood-soaked meat cleaver believed to have been used in the rampage.

The incident follows a number of what appear to have been random knife attacks in mainland China.

On Monday, police in Shenzhen - an hour away from Hong Kong by train - detained a man for stabbing three people to death.

That arrest came days after another man was arrested in Henan province for a knife attack that killed five.
