Chinese 'Princeling' Gets 10 Years for Role in Gang Rape

A Beijing court has sentenced the 17-year-old son of a Chinese general to 10 years in prison for his role in a gang rape, the Guardian reported Thursday.

Li Tianyi is the son of popular military singer Meng Ge, and his father is Li Shuangjiang, a general who also serves as dean of the music department at the People’s Liberation Army’s Academy of Arts.

The offspring of China’s military and political elite are commonly referred to as “princelings” and thought to be above the law.

Li Tianyi and four other defendants were convicted of getting a woman drunk and gang-raping her in February at a Beijing hotel. Three others received sentences of three to four years, while another man (the only legal adult in the group), was sentenced to 12 years, according to the Guardian.

According to Li's family, the victim was a prostitute engaging in consensual sex. Li received a harsher sentence than his co-defendants because of his lack of remorse and refusal to compensate the victim.

The other defendants have each given her 150,000 yuan, (more than $24,500). Li's defense lawyer has said he would appeal.

Lan Rongjie, a law professor at Zhejiang University law professor said the 10-year sentence given Li Tianyi was the maximum an adolescent can receive for gang rape.

"If this was not Li Tianyi, and his case had not drawn the attention of so many people, I think the sentence would be lighter," he said.

Individuals posting on Sina Weibo, a Chinese social media network, reacted more skeptically on Thursday afternoon, expressing doubt that Li would serve his full sentence, the Guardian reported.

"They say it's 10 years, but who knows how long he'll actually be locked up for," wrote one user.

"I hope with all my heart that this case is the beginning of true justice and strikes against those real tigers, the products of entitlement," wrote another.
