Canada to Begin Exporting Shale Gas to Japan

By    |   Wednesday, 25 Sep 2013 02:45 PM

An agreement was has been reached between Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Prime Minister Stephen Harper of Canada to begin exporting shale gas to Japan, according to The Japan Times.

Canada is the second country after the United States to provide Japan with natural gas.
“We have special assets to offer there,” said Harper and “obviously Japan is the largest single importer of energy products in the world. So there’s obviously a natural partnership there.”

It will take until 2018 for the first Canadian gas to arrive.

To prepare for shale gas exports to Japan, the two leaders said they would accelerate ministerial level talks, a Japanese official said.

The talks also included the potential for Japan to assist in developing the necessary infrastructure in Canada to ship shale gas, with Abe asking Harper to allow Japanese firms to participate in shale-gas related projects.

By the year 2020, North American shale gas will likely make up to 30 percent of Japan’s demand, as reported by The Australian.

The shale gas, a relatively inexpensive energy source, is expected to reduce the soaring costs of utilities within Japan due to the shutdown of nuclear power plants in the wake of the Fukushima atomic crisis.

As negotiations continued at the summit talks in Ottawa, the two leaders agreed to develop cooperation in boosting trade within bilateral and multilateral frameworks.

Of particular interest is the mutual agreement to have the Japanese Self-Defense Forces and the Canadian military provide logistical support to each other when engaged in international humanitarian assistance missions.

These primarily will include U.N. peacekeeping operations.
